Molar Pregnancy

Molar Pregnancy is such a terrible term, and so is hydatidiform mole, which is another name for a molar pregnancy. A terrible term for a terrible thing. The hydatidiform mole is a mass that develops in the uterus instead of the fetus. Basically it is because of a chromosomal abnormality. It is NOT common and happens in about 1 in 1000 pregnancies. The rate is slightly higher for women over the age of 40 and in Asian countries.

How do I know if I have it?

Talk to your doctor if you have the signs which include vaginal bleeding and severe nausea and vomiting. Of course, plenty of people have severe nausea and vomiting and vaginal bleeding and do not have a molar pregnancy. Again, it only happens in about 1 in 1000 pregnancies, so don't freak out reading this.

A complete mole is when there is no baby but the placenta grows which produces HCG which shows up on pregnancy tests as indicating that you are pregnant. A partial mole is when 2 sperm fertilize an egg and instead of creating twins, something goes wrong and the one embryo has too many chromosomes and is unable to survive.
